The EDIC Lite Vision system
This system is used to inspect the surfaces of used surgical instruments after the decontamination process is completed. This allows the user to evaluate how efficient the washer disinfectors are performing.
Our product is a high magnification, fluorescence protein imaging system, made to detect low levels of contamination, that may still be present on surgical instruments after cleaning. This information can be used to monitor cleaning and implement any necessary changes. Keeping patients and staff safe from potentially harmful pathogens that could be present on reused instruments.

The EDIC Lite vision system uses a combination of hardware, software, and instrument protein staining to perform its inspection and quantification task. These aspects have been tailored and developed with the guidance of a leading Central Sterile Services Dept (CSSD) based in the UK.
Best Scientific Analytical Ltd has spent years developing and testing the EDIC Lite system to make it affordable for NHS trusts and easy for CSSD staff to use. Most importantly of all, it provides a detailed quality control procedure to increase patient safety.
How does EDIC Lite Vision System work?
The basic principle of operation is that a CSSD staff member stains the surgical instruments requiring inspection, with a liquid stain. The purpose of this stain is to increase the luminosity of potential protein contamination, so that the optical system can more effectively visualise it. This system has been configured solely to complete this task, to the highest level of accuracy possible.
The user then places the stained instrument on the sample stage, which sits directly underneath the mounted optical housing. They can then live view the instrument at high magnification to manually search for proteinaceous contamination. The optical housing has Z axis adjustment via a manual control knob to adjust image focus. The mechanical stage that the sample is placed on is also manually adjustable for X Y axis. This allows the user to focus, orientate and navigate around the instrument to search for areas of contamination. A tilt table stage is also provided to allow examination of complex instruments.
The EDIC Lite system produces live images via on-board camera, displaying them on a laptop monitor connected by simple USB connection. The user combines manual physical controls with software interface & adjustments, to locate and image all areas of contamination present on the instrument side. The software then applies a semi-automatic routine to process the below information quickly and efficiently:
- to provide you with the services you have requested
- to comply with other law, including for the period demanded by our tax authorities
- to support a claim or defence in court
This provides the CSSD detailed information to determine potential trends, to monitor their cleaning process and assist in concluding an interpretation of its current effectiveness.
A comprehensive instruction guide is provided concerning all areas of the operation of the EDIC Lite vision system. Best Scientific Analytical Ltd welcome contact from users and provide detailed technical assistance.

Surgical Device Cleanliness
The EDIC Lite vision system is a novel laboratory analysis microscope created for the purpose of scanning surgical instruments, to identify prion protein contamination before they are reused.
The vision system is to be used by healthcare professionals in Sterile Service Departments (SSDs) to measure residual proteins on a range of surgical instruments after the decontamination process is complete. This process ensures that no contaminated instrument is reused, increasing patient safety. This vision system also allows SSDs to monitor the efficiency of the surgical instrument cleaning process, identify dangers and suggest revisions continuously.
The EDIC Lite vision system complies with relevant sections of the HTM 01-01 referring to methods for detecting residual protein. This system complies with the BSA standards of accuracy supplying data of contamination per instruments side to a level of ≤5µg. The product is CE marked as a medical device as per the guidelines provided in the Medical Device Regulation(MDR). It is suitably categorised with the Global Medical Device Nomenclature (GMDN) and registered with the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).
This system has been developed with a prominent SSD based in the UK so that all specific requirements have been implemented at the early design stage and then optimised for cost and performance efficiency. This product is designed and manufactured with the user’s budget, specification, and specific requirements from inception.

Direct Residual protein test
The EDIC Lite vision system has changed the way that quality control is performed on decontaminated surgical instruments. The EDIC Lite scans instruments directly looking for areas of contamination in situ on the instrument and provides a quantified result.
Previously, SSDs had to perform swabbing tests to identify instrument contamination which is time consuming and less accurate. The instrument protein staining technique combined with fluorescence illumination and high magnification optical system, provides the hardware for users to analyse instrument surfaces directly. Combined with our software and image analysis techniques, users can calculate the amount of contamination still present on a selected instrument surface. This allows SSDs to continually monitor their washer disinfector performance and complete a quality control routing much quicker than ever before.

What’s in the box?
The EDIC Lite system features a stable work base with support pillar that suspends a housed optical configuration, adjustable sample stage, illumination unit, and camera.
Most of the unit arrives pre-assembled. However, there are some parts that require unpacking individually (they are packed separately for their protection) and connecting to the system as per the instructions included. The modular nature of the product is beneficial as individual parts can be upgraded with new technology or replaced if faulty very easily.
Detailed instructions of how to assemble and operate the system are included.
You will also receive information on how to a log on to the secure area of this website so that you can download the latest version of the software and PDF versions of the product manual and instructions.
The product is shipped in a heavy-duty custom-made shipping carton featuring internal padding / protection for the product. It is recommended that you keep the container after unpacking and assembly, just in case there is a problem with your system. Best Scientific Analytical Ltd can then assist you with further necessary transportation.
There are no variants of the product, all are the same configuration as illustrated on the website.
In addition, you will need appropriate Sypro Ruby stain gel for the protein preparation and a PC / Laptop to run the software. These are not included.

FAQ's
The EDIC Lite is designed to inspect surgical instruments after the washer disinfector process is completed to identify if any protein contamination remains. Therefore, it evaluates how efficient the washer disinfector cleaning process was. The EDIC Lite quantifies total protein contamination, at current wavelength, per instrument side.
No, it is easy to use having been designed with simplicity in mind so that you need minimal (if any) training to operate. Full instructions are provided with a step-by-step guide to the full process of assembling the EDIC Lite right up to processing instruments, protein staining and data gathering.
- Take a sample of clean surgical instrument
- Spray them with fluorescent stain, rinse off and let dry
- Inspect the dry stained instruments using the EDIC Lite vision system, search for areas of contamination and use the software to calculate the total residual contamination present.
It was designed in collaboration with and for use by hospital Sterile Service Departments (SSDs) to measure residual proteins on a range of surgical instruments after the decontamination process. However, it can also be applied wherever surgical instruments are being cleaned, to evaluate their departments cleaning process and washer disinfector performance.

Previously SSDs relied on elution or swabbing techniques to detect residual protein. EDIC Lite can detect protein contamination directly on the affected instruments and quantify it.
Some SSDs are also equipped with a full microscope for this same process. However, the EDIC Lite streamlines this process to make it much more cost and time efficient. The optical elements have been stripped down to the necessary parts, and the software gives the user a closed process to follow to input the data and establish results.
Most parts you need are included except for the below:
- Sypro Ruby stain gel, for staining the surgical instruments before processing.
- A PC orlaptop with a suitable minimum system specification to run the software, this is not provided with the system.Computer system specification details can be found on this website or contact us for info.
Once you have purchased an EDIC Lite system, you will be issued with a username and password to access the secure area of this website where you will find all the information you need. Software and documentation (e.g. instructions) are also available for download.
Yes, ideally once a year to clean and make necessary repairs. As this is a specialist machine, servicing should onlybe completed by Best Scientific AnalyticalLtd trained staff. This is a modular system so parts that break / wear out can be easily replaced. This work would all be completed on a quotation basis but is low cost. Contact us for more information.
